We tried all 10 of the new Halo Top Flavors
We aren’t paid by Halo Top or anything, we just like ice cream.
My friends and I have been pretty in love with Halo Top, a brand new ice cream that is made from prebiotic fibers (we don’t know what this means), is a good source of protein (24g per pint), and contains ~20% of the calories of normal ice cream! It’s delicious.
We tried the original 7 flavors and we were hooked. Recently, Halo Top came out with 10 new flavors. We were beyond excited, so we decided to do a little taste test.
We ranked each flavor from 1–7 (7 being the highest). The new flavors also came with new calorie levels, up to 360 calories for the most heavy hitting flavors. We also included the original 7 flavors for reference.
Here are the results:
According to our resident data scientist, Mike Kneier, the flavors we agreed upon the most were Strawberry, Mint Chip, Oatmeal Cookie, and Chocolate Almond Crunch.
Birthday Cake, Peanut Butter and Black Cherry were rated highly on average, but there was always at least one person who disagreed.
Surprisingly, the highest calorie flavors weren’t the highest rated. We actually seemed to prefer flavors that were lower in calorie (except for maybe Red Velvet, you sly devil).
Oatmeal Cookie: It tastes a bit like a Snickerdoodle with bits of oatmeal mixed in. It’s pretty sweet, but it’s worth it.
Chocolate Almond Crunch: Almondy and creamy. If you don’t like almond, this flavor isn’t for you. It tastes like marzipan but in ice cream form with chunks of almond mixed in.
Pistachio: Delicious. If you like pistachio, this won’t disappoint. There aren’t any pistachio chunks in it, but the flavor is pretty spot on.
Black Cherry: Creamy and sweet, but not too overpowering. With bits of black cherry mixed in, it wouldn’t be hard to eat a whole pint.
Red Velvet: This one has the highest amount of calories and is true to taste. Red Velvet tastes like Red Velvet cake. There are chocolatey cake chunks mixed in which makes this flavor well worth it.
Cookies and Cream: This one had our lowest rating of the new flavors. The overall taste is reminiscent of fruit. You get a flash of the intended flavor, but then aftertaste is unpleasant. Not at all worth your time.
Cookie Dough: Similar to the Birthday Cake flavor for the bulk of the ice cream. However, the cookie dough hunks have an odd “fake” taste that takes away from the overall flavor. Cookie Dough fans will be disappointed.
Sea Salt Caramel: This one is pretty sweet, but true to it’s name. If you want a sweet, creamy caramel ice cream, this is it. True to flavor.
Peanut Butter: Peanut butter flavored ice cream with ribbons of peanut butter swirled in. If you love peanut butter, you’ll like this ice cream. It tastes like peanut butter, but with way fewer calories. Tasty.
S’mores: This one was a little odd. If you’re expecting s’mores, this isn’t quite it. It has more of a maple flavor so it isn’t true to the intended flavor, but it’s still pretty good.
Overall, we think the new flavors are a great addition to the original 7. We still have a sweet spot for Strawberry and Mint; it’s hard to out-do the classics.
If you’re looking for a nice ice cream that’s not overpowering, try Pistachio or Black Cherry.
If you’re into flavor that’ll knock your socks off, pick up Oatmeal Cookie, Chocolate Almond Crunch, or Red Velvet.
And if you’re looking for something that tastes like fruity dirt, pick up some Cookies and Cream.
Thanks to Mike Solomon, Mike Kneier, and Lesley Yates for taste testing!
